The role of values in preventing and managing conflict at work

Why do people, managers and organisations find it so hard to address conflict early? If people at work were better at handling disagreement and conflict, CMP  Resolutions would be out of a job – but business has never been better!

Human beings are hard-wired for the ‘fight or flight’ response so the urge is either to sort out the danger by attacking, or avoid it by running away, and we see this in almost every workplace today. It takes a skilled individual to feel comfortable in facing up to a situation which might result in conflict, and a highly skilled individual to exit from that conversation with the working relationship intact.

Those whose natural instinct is to fight are likely to have fallen out with a fair few people over the course of their careers! In a fight there’s a winner and a loser, and the loser does not always take defeat lying down. And productivity goes out of the window.

So in this paper we look at the role that values can play in supporting a more constructive approach to difficult situations at work.
