Setting up an internal mediation service can be demanding of management time and attention, and take expertise and focus away from other core strategic functions.
You also run the risk of not getting a good return on your investment if cases don’t get referred and you don’t do many mediations.
It may be a more appropriate solution to set up a call-off contract with an independent mediation provider. Increasing numbers of organisations occasionally refer a mediation to an external provider; many now set up call-off contracts whereby the external provider carries out the bulk of their mediations.
This paper looks at what drives organisations to make that decision, and what you need to weigh when considering this option for your own company.
